Wood wicks behave differently than standard cotton. Whether this is your first vessel or your fiftieth, a little technique ensures the best performance. We’ve compiled the essential mechanics to help you master the crackle and ensure a clean burn from the first light to the bottom of the jar.

The Timber Core: Native Fruitwood. Our spiral wicks are a feat of natural engineering. Sourced exclusively from FSC-certified mills in the USA, we utilize sustainably harvested American fruitwood. This specific density ensures a clean, efficient burn pattern that traditional flat wicks cannot match.
The Acoustic Ritual: Beyond the visual, these wicks provide an auditory texture. The spiral design amplifies the wood's natural resonance, creating a consistent crackle that mimics the grounding atmosphere of a cabin hearth.
The Science of the Crackle: Why does it sound like a fire? It is a matter of cellular hydrodynamics. Even seasoned wood retains microscopic pockets of moisture within its fibers. As the flame heats the wood, this trapped water reaches a boiling point and vaporizes into steam. When the pressure exceeds the strength of the surrounding cellulose, it bursts outward. That "pop" you hear is actually a series of microscopic steam explosions releasing energy.

We anchor our hand-swirled rituals in a pure, plant-based foundation. Our proprietary blend of sustainably sourced soy and coconut wax is crafted through precise hydrogenation, creating a stable, premium pour without a drop of paraffin. This means a non-toxic, clean burn that respects your air quality—free from carcinogens, black soot, and hidden pollutants. A safer flame for you and your home.
Visual Art & Acoustic Comfort: Watch the ritual in motion above. Our Hand-Swirled Spiral Wood Wick vessels are crafted for those who crave a complete sensory experience—rich scent, unique visual movement, and the grounding sound of a crackling hearth.
The alchemy goes deeper than just the flame. We infuse our plant-based wax with ethically sourced mica. As the candle burns, this mineral element awakens, turning the melt pool into a shimmering, molten dance that mesmerizes the eye while the wick soothes the ear.

The First Burn: Setting the Memory. Patience is the most important ingredient in a clean burn. When you light your vessel for the first time, you must allow the melt pool to extend all the way to the glass edges. This establishes the "wax memory."
If you extinguish the flame too early—as shown in the example above—the wax will "remember" that narrow ring and tunnel downwards on every future burn. To avoid wasting the wax on the sides, allow the heat to fully calibrate the pool before blowing it out.

The Consequence: Tunneling. If the melt pool is interrupted on the first burn, the wax sets a permanent, narrow boundary. Instead of melting evenly, the flame will drill a vertical hole—or "tunnel"—down the center, leaving a thick wall of wasted wax on the sides.
The Ideal State: Observe the smaller vessel in the photo. Notice how the liquid pool extends completely to the glass walls. This edge-to-edge melt is the standard required to unlock the full life of your candle.
The visible rings in this vessel reveal a history of short burns. As the vertical tunnel deepens, it isolates the wick and starves the flame of necessary oxygen. Eventually, the wick will either suffocate or drown in the deep melt pool, rendering the candle useless.
Maintenance: This principle applies to all jar candles. While a full melt pool isn't mandatory for every single lighting, we recommend a periodic "reset burn." Allowing the wax to fully level out occasionally ensures an even descent and maximizes the life of your vessel.

If your vessel has already begun to tunnel, it can often be salvaged using a simple thermal correction technique.
The Foil Method: If the wick will stay lit, wrap a layer of aluminum foil around the top of the jar to create a dome, leaving an opening in the center for airflow (as shown). This insulates the vessel, trapping heat to melt the stubborn wax on the sidewalls. The Result: This process effectively performs a "memory reset" on the wax. Flame height may fluctuate due to the heat, but patience is key. Allow it to burn until the pool levels out completely.
Wick Maintenance: The wood wick acts as a straw, drawing wax up to the flame. If the top is clogged with charred wood, the candle cannot breathe. Before every light, trim the wick to approximately ⅛” and remove the brittle char. Specialized tools are optional; standard wire cutters or heavy-duty nail clippers often provide the cleanest cut.

The Diagnosis: The visible layers here reveal a history of incomplete burns. As this vertical tunnel deepens, it eventually starves the wick of oxygen or drowns it in the melt pool, making a sustained flame impossible.
The Fix: If the wick still lights, use a thermal reset. Wrap the vessel’s rim in aluminum foil, creating a dome with a central vent (as shown). This insulation traps heat, forcing the stubborn sidewall wax to melt and leveling the surface. The flame height may fluctuate during this process, but be patient—allow it to burn until the pool is fully restored.
The Error:
Over-Trimming: wick in this image was cut too short, allowing the rising wax to flood the wood and extinguish the flame.
The Standard: To prevent drowning, precision is required. Always maintain a wick height of ⅛” so the wood stands clear of the melt pool. You don’t need specialized equipment for this; standard wire cutters or nail clippers provide the perfect control.
The Mechanics of Fuel: A common misconception is that the wood provides the burn. In reality, the wax is the fuel, and the wick is merely the delivery system. If the wick is left too long or clogged with old char, the wax cannot travel upward efficiently.
The Protocol: Maintain a strict ⅛” height and snap off brittle edges before every light. Simple wire cutters or nail clippers are the best tools for this precision work.
